Teaching English Online

Today I had my first taste of teaching English online.  What can I say about it?  Well, it wasn't all that hard to tell you frankly.  Of course, it's hard when the people you're talking to can only say "yes" or "no" or "I don't know," and you have no idea if they really understand what you're talking about, but somehow it gives you the feeling that they're at least trying to understand you, probably because the lesson is already paid for.  When you have somebody's full attention, even if they don't know what you're saying, it gives you a good feeling.  So the experience today wasn't very positive as far as solid results go, but at least I got some positive emotions from it.  Unfortunately, my internet connection wasn't up to snuff, plus I kept on getting disconnected.  Maybe if I didn't have to turn video on, it would've sufficed.  However, audio AND video were required, and that overloaded my poor bandwidth.  Add the unreliable router that kept on disconnecting me, and I had the recipe for a disaster.  Good thing my students were kids aged 11 to 16, so they were fairly forgiving.  I shudder to think if those were professionals.  They'd have probably asked for a refund straightaway!

I don't really want to give it up so soon, because the kids were cute!  Particularly a little girl that even asked me for a present as her birthday is just days away.  But until I get the bandwidth I need, and a reliable router that wouldn't disconnect me intermittently, I have no choice but to put that project in the back burner for now.

There's another one coming up this Wednesday (12/22/2010), teaching English online w/o video...  That might be something I can manage.  If I pass the screening process, that is.

And I must say, my fiancée has been very supportive!  She told me "I'm proud of you.  As long as you tried, that's what matters."  I couldn't have gotten better praise than that!  She's my jewel, that girl.

Anyways, if anyone of you would like to try out this online English teaching stint, here are the qualifications:

• American accent, or at least a neutral accent
• Grammar proficiency (Hey, accent isn't everything!)
• A computer (duh!), webcam (don't get it from CDR King!), and a headset with a microphone
• A DSL connection with at least 300 Kbps down and 400 Kbps up.  1 Mbps strongly recommended
• The patience of an elephant (I'm not kidding!)
• The desire to earn $2.699 per hour (Philippine rate - Php120 per hour)
• A genuine desire to foster international goodwill through teaching (Debatable, I admit)
• Will not quit after 1 session! (I'm so guilty of this, but I felt it needed to be said)
• A fun, enthusiastic, and cheerful (dare I say perky?) personality

If you do decide that teaching English online is your thing, I bid you good luck on your endeavors!  It has the potential to be a very good source of income if you're a stay-at-home person such as myself.

Building your first online business website

Okay, so a couple of months ago (or was that a year ago?), I was toying around with the idea of starting an online internet business.  I started making a list of what I would need: a domain, a web hosting service, a website, and of course, products to sell.  While buying a domain and getting a web hosting service weren't all that cheap, they weren't all that expensive either.  Those were the least of my concerns.  What I hit a snag on were the remaining pieces of the puzzle!

Building a website

Building your own site is no walk in the park, especially for a non-web designer person such as myself.  From my initial list, I now started a new list under "website."  Unfortunately, all I knew to put under that list is HTML.  Now learning HTML is not exactly a walk in the park, but it's not exactly rocket science either.  More and more people are learning it everyday, whether via classroom training or via online self-taught training.  The problem with this is the time it will actually take you to learn it.  So now I've learned it, along with CSS and Javascript.  What now?  Although I'm proud to say that I've put up my own website, it IS rather plain and uninspired.  A graphic designer I am not, undoubtedly.  More work in store for me, for sure, before I can start with my online business empire...

Products to sell

So assuming I had my own domain and hosting services, and I can competently build my own website without using Dreamweaver and the like, what was I going to sell?  Practically, one should sell what one has knowledge and interest of, right?  I guess to that end, I still would need to come up with a real list of niche markets I'll consider getting into.  I have a lot of interests: video games, electronics, movies, etc., so it's not going to be easy.

Personal Investing

So recently I got it into my head that I want to get rich, sooner rather than later.  Obviously, I've been gallivanting around all my 39 years and I've gotten nowhere.  Now though, I've firmed up my resolve and I've decided to buckle down and do what it takes to round up some money so I can go on my merry way and get on with living, as it were.  To that end, I've been sniffing around and found out about affiliate marketing.  As part of internet marketing (IM), it's one that carries a very low risk, but has the potential for huge gains.  You don't carry inventory, you don't ship out anything, you just get paid.  Granted, this entails that you market aggressively via your own website, blog, and social networking sites, but if you know what you're doing, you could possibly quit your 9-5 day job and be your own boss!  This means you need traffic, lots of it.  You need a list of people to send e-mail blasts out, etc.  That's not as easy as you think, as I'm finding out now.  So I'm scouring the internet for the best leads, reading up on every material I can find, and hoping to high heaven that I finally find something that will guide me to become the internet marketer that I can be.  Along my journey, I discovered THIS, and maybe, just maybe, this is what I've been looking around for.  Save yourself the hassle and go check it out, and let me know what you think.

What have I been up to?

So what have I been up to? Well, I've been busying myself with trying to find alternate sources of income.  First thing I stumbled onto is Pay To Click or PTC, where you click on ads and you get paid for each click.  True, it's not going to make you rich, and truthfully it'll take 2 to 3 months before you could even check-out the measly $2 you were clicking on daily, but hey, it's money!  Next thing is affiliate marketing.  Actually, I'm just an affiliate for the PTC sites I'm a member of.  Thing is, I'm just gearing up for the "real" affiliate marketing, and this is great practice for me.  Why don't you check out my website: http://www.how-to-ptc.zymichost.com and look it over?  Who knows, you might find it interesting enough to do on your spare time.

Aside from that, I've also applied with Toyota Marikina as a Marketing Professional.  I'm still waiting for my final interview, but I see this as training to overcome my shyness, and make some money along the way.  Sounds like a great deal if you ask me!  And lastly, I'm also going to try teaching English online, to both Koreans and Japanese.  I really hope to pull it off.  It's one thing to teach my countrymen, it's quite another to go international...  But again, what's there to lose? 

What's in the pipeline: Life Insurance.  When I get around to that, I'll be sure to blog about it.
